Russia`s imitation on Versailles, Peterhof, 34 km west of St Petersburg, was the primary country residence of the tsars, especially during the 18th and early 20th centuries.
Begun by Peter the Great and expanded by Empress Elizabeth and Catherine the Great, it comprises several dozen buildings, nine of which are now museums.
The famous among them is Grand Palace – home of Russian Tsars for more than two centuries, with magnificent interiors, exquisite furniture and paintings by Italian, English, Flamish and Russian artists.
All of these are worth seeing, but Peterhof is best known for its gardens, parks, and magnificent fountains.
One of the largest fountains is the Samson Fountain, in the centre of the Great Grotto. In addition to Peterhof`s grand fountains, you will come across numerous “trick” fountains, designed to shower unwary passersby.
The tour of the parks and the Grand Palace can be an enjoyable day out during your stay with us.
