The long yellow colonnaded building overlooking the river Moika is Yusupov Palace. The Palace was built in the 1760s by Vallin de la Mothe, and from the early 19th century until the Bolshevik Revolution, it was the principal residence of the Yusopovs, one of the wealthiest families in Russia, and close friends and allies to the imperial court. After the Winter Palace, Yusupov Palace has the most spectacular interiors in the city. The most popular of the lavish interiors is the exotic Moorish room, complete with a fountain andmosaics. The exhibition in the cellars recounts the story of the infamous Rasputin murdered here by a group of aristocrats led by Prince Yusupov. |
